Cleaning can be an enjoyable and rewarding exercise, but not necessarily for everyone. Of course, cleaning your home brings numerous aesthetic and health benefits. The problem is that some people just don’t care. Many people adore the comfort of clothes, books, and other things strewn in their room. After all, no one’s taught to enjoy being comfortable.

However, part of that attachment to comfort comes from how cumbersome cleaning can be. Sometimes you don’t have the right equipment, so cleaning involves more than just cleaning: you have to buy the equipment. Or do you? Here are some cleaning hacks to get rid of common messes and stains with things you can easily find in your home.

Removing Soap Scum and Water Stains

Water stains typically occur due to water leaks from some appliance. Once the water evaporates, it leaves a patch of mineral deposits: a water stain. Soap scum refers to a grayish layer formed by a mixture of soap and hard water.

Both are unsightly, but there’s a way to conveniently get rid of them: vinegar. Let the water stains soak in vinegar for a while, and then rub the stain away with a toothbrush or sponge. Similarly, mix vinegar with soap and use a sponge to scrub away any soap scum you find.

Cleaning Grease

Grease is another common source of fabric and carpet stains. Fortunately, they’re also very easy to remove if you have some alcohol base and salt at home (and who doesn’t?). Mix the salt and alcohol in a 1:4 ratio and rub it into the stain with a piece of cloth. Let the mixture dry, and after that, vacuum the stained spot to finish up the cleaning.

Clearing out Broken Glass

Broken glass on the ground

Cleaning up broken glass is difficult and dangerous because of the smaller pieces. They’re hard to see, so you may miss some while cleaning. As a result, you may step on it, and it can pierce your foot.

Given how difficult it is to clean up glass (and how painful messing up can be), this is one of the more useful hacks. As odd as it may sound, you can use a piece of bread to clean up the glass. Press the slice (like a stamp) against the ground where you suspect there are small shards. Keep doing this until the slice is coated in glass and dust particles.
